The Garner Police Department is seeking Police Officer candidates desiring a community-oriented law enforcement career.
Police Officers are responsible for performing protective service work in the prevention, detection, and investigation of violations of the law. Officers are assigned to a patrol squad and work rotating shifts. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Police Sergeant or Corporal. The Career Development Program offers an outstanding opportunity for professional enhancement and advancement in salary. With tenure, training, and above-average levels of performance, officers can compete for a variety of specialized positions and promotions. They include Canine Handler, Traffic Safety Officer, School Resource Officer, Investigator, Special Response Team, Crisis Negotiator, Field Training Officer, Community Liaison, and others. Officers are provided with state-of-the-art equipment, take-home cars (for those in compliance with Department policy), uniforms, and all related apparel. The current starting salary for police officers is $54,708. However, salary incentives may be provided for the following credentials as determined by the Chief of Police:The starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications. The current hiring range is $54,708 - $71,113.

Candidates will be expected to have: thorough knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the Town; general knowledge of departmental rules and regulations; general knowledge of Town ordinances; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear and comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of motor vehicles; and the ability to render credible testimony in a court of law.
Selected candidates will be notified and must participate in an Information Session and successfully complete a written evaluation (POST). Candidates selected to continue will be required to participate in an oral panel interview. Candidates issued a conditional offer will be required to qualify with a Garner Police-issued handgun, submit to a background investigation, CVSA (truth verification) exam, drug screening, medical exam, psychological exam, and an interview with the Police Chief. PLEASE NOTE:1) As part of the application process for Police Officer, you must complete the online Town of Garner application. In addition, you are required to fill out the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission Personal History Statement (Form F-3). This form is lengthy and you should allow plenty of time to complete it and have it notarized. You will also need to complete two (2) release forms. Finally, you will need to complete the "History of Prior Applications with Criminal Justice Agencies" form.
These four (4) additional documents must be received by the Garner Police Department within 7 days of initial application. Applicants may choose to attach the completed documents to their initial application to meet this deadline.
