Summary

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is seeking a highly motived and skilled Director for the Athletics, Aquatics, Golf, and Ice Arenas Department for the MPRB. Responsible for leading, directing, and coordinating the daily operations and service delivery for Athletics, Aquatics, Golf, and Ice Arenas. Responsible for planning, managing, directing, and implementing goals and objectives pertaining to the MPRB Athletics, Aquatics, Golf, and Ice Arenas facilities, services, programs, events, and activities for the MPRB.

What You’ll Do

Collaboratively lead and direct the development, updating, and implementation of a comprehensive plan to assess adult and youth athletics, aquatics, golf, and ice arenas to ensure that services meet the current and future needs of a diverse Minneapolis population.

Strategically lead and manage operations for adult and youth athletics, aquatics, golf, and ice arenas to promote highly respected services and facilities, including executing administrative work and functions, identifying and implementing safety practices, and addressing upkeep and maintenance issues.

Foster and demonstrate effective leadership building in a collaborative environment including working across department lines and forming partnerships that foster better citizen services; eliminating barriers to achieving results; building alliances with key decision makers; taking full advantage of available resources; and providing direction in the development of short- and long-range plans.

Create a work environment that encourages staff to perform to the best of their abilities and holds every employee accountable for results.

Prepare and administer the department’s budget, which includes performance goals, expenses, and revenues; perform cost control activities; monitor revenue and expenditures to assure sound fiscal control; and assure effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, and facilities.

Develop short- and long-term department policies, objectives, and goals.   Evaluate programs, activities, and services to ensure they are meeting planned objectives using best practices.

Actively manage and monitor performance matrix system for department activities; recommend work activity adjustments based on performance results; and gather, interpret, and prepare data for studies, reports, and recommendations.

Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.

What To Bring

Need to Have; 

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Park and Recreation Administration, Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related field.  Master’s degree preferred.

Increasingly responsible experience in recreation program and service delivery:  at least six (6) years

Increasingly responsible experience managing ice arena, golf, aquatic, and/or athletic facilities: at least six (6) years

Experience in leadership, management, and administration: at least six (6) years

Experience supervising others: at least six (6) years

Experience supervising unionized employees: at least three (3) years preferred

Licensing Requirements:

Valid driver’s license and safe driving record

CPRP designation preferred

Physical Requirements: 

The physical ability to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, pull, push, finger, feel, grasp, lift, talk, see, hear, and perform repetitive motions.

The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle as incumbents are subject to local travel to and from work locations.

Operating office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements.

The ability to remain in a sitting or standing position for extended periods of time.

The incumbent may be required to traverse on rough, uneven terrain, as well as wet and slippery surfaces and to ascend and descend ladders to access work areas.

The work may occasionally involve the ability to perform light lifting (up to 30 pounds).

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Normal office environment 70% of the time.  30% of the time out in the field visiting facility sites and attending meetings.

Work is primarily performed in an office setting and requires some offsite visits to park locations and facilities. Attendance required at some evening Board meetings/ other public meetings(approximately twice per month).

Contemporary principles and best practices of recreation programming and administration to meet the needs and expectations of a diverse customer base.

Contemporary managerial and supervisory principles and practices including budget preparation and administration.

Critically analyze and evaluate operations and project alternatives to make recommendations and institute improvements in business and service delivery without disrupting existing operations.

Negotiate effective and appropriate solutions to difficult conflicts.

Set appropriate priorities while coordinating multiple projects and meeting critical deadlines.

Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.
