Position details

II. Major Responsibilities:

1. Provides security for the safety and protection of UMass Memorial Medical Center’s patients, staff, and the general public and properties.

2. Patrols, periodically, buildings and grounds of, UMass Memorial Medical Center properties.

3. Examines doors, windows, and other points of entry to determine that they are secure.

4. Warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles, and apprehends or expels persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts, in accordance with applicable laws.

5. Watches for and reports irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, other hazards and security doors left unlocked.

6. Observes departing personnel to guard against theft of UMass Memorial property.

7. Records data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and other acts of suspicious activity.

8. Assists UMass Memorial Police Department and other local authorities with investigations of incidents committed on UMass Memorial properties.

9. Reports all criminal acts to the Police Sergeant and/or the UMass Memorial Police Department.

10. Assists staff as required providing protection and safety to patients or other individuals.

11. Responds to requests for entry into secure areas, assists with funeral homes, and withdrawals from the patient belongings safe.

12. Monitors pedestrian walkways and parking lots ensuring safety, traffic direction, and parking enforcement.

13. Completes incident reports.

14. Adheres to all general and/or special orders as directed by the Police Sergeant.

Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:

1. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.

2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.

3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.

4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.

6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.

7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

1. Equivalent to high school education plus addition specialized courses.

2. Valid Massachusetts License to operate motor vehicle

3. CPR/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire/transfer into this job as a condition of employment.'

Experience/Skills:

Required:

1. 2 years of experience and/or previous formal training in public safety or customer service area

2. Communication skills necessary to interact with employees, patients, visitors, and the general public.

3. Must also be able to work under sometimes-stressful conditions and maintain a calm composure.

Preferred:

1. Three (3) years of prior public safety experience.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Ability to mobilize quickly and efficiently. Position requires walking and standing for long periods in all weather conditions. May be exposed to bodily fluids and environmental hazards. See attached grid for guidelines of specific requirements.
