JOB DESCRIPTION

Minimum - Maximum PAY GRADE: MT-02
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes. Operate school vehicle with 14 passengers or less that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations. Complete a district required commercial driver's license (CDL) training program and obtain CDL within one (1) year of employment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Must be able to read, write, and speak in English at the 8th grade level.
- Must have a valid Texas driver's license and be insurable
- Must be 18 years of age
- Knowledge of student discipline procedures and ability to manage student behavior
- Ability to operate 14 passenger vehicle
- Must be able to work on evening shifts after 2:30 p.m. as required or assigned
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Vehicle Operation
- Follows assigned route and adhere to established schedules as required.
- Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities, UIL and special events (often in evenings, nights, or weekends) as required.
- Checks vehicle for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
- Maintain and keep updated records on bus route schedules and maps, daily student counts, and mileage, fuel and oil consumption.
- Keeps assigned vehicle clean and fueled.
Student Management
- Follow safe bus loading and unloading procedures.
- Follow necessary procedures to ensure no child is left behind or without supervision while on the bus.
- Communicates with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior.
- Maintains discipline; reports student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
- Ensure students are in age appropriate child safety restrains at all times during transport.
- Instructs student on safe riding rules and regulations.
Safety
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school vehicles.
- In the event of an accident, assures that medical emergency procedures are followed: completes a written accident report as required by District protocols
- Inspect vehicle by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure vehicle can be operated safely before driving.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, and reflector, etc.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately. Conduct annual bus evacuation drills, as required by the Department of Education, and implement evacuations as required in an emergency.
- Increase safe operation(s) during inclement weather.
- Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
Other
- Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
- Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
