PREREQUISITES FOR APPLYING:

Minimum 16 years of age by first day of employment
**Current Certifications in:
Lifeguard Training - American Red Cross, Ellis or USLA
CPR for the Professional - American Red Cross
AED - American Red Cross
**Certifications are preferred but not required at time of application. On the job training will be provided to receive certifications prior to starting on shift as a Lifeguard.



PRERQUISITES FOR EMPLOYMENT:
  • Water skills test
  • CPR practical exam and interview
  • Up to 40 hours of staff training
  • Pre-employment Drug/Alcohol Test
  • Rescue Board Test
  • All written exams

NATURE OF WORK :
Responsible for the supervision and safety of all patrons at the Evanston Lakefront.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):
  • Know and enforce all rules and regulations pertaining to the Evanston Lakefront
  • Use proper surveillance techniques to guard the swimming area
  • Identify patrons in need of emergency assistance and respond appropriately
  • Attend staff training sessions
  • Assist in the management of the beaches
  • Assist in the collection of monies and checking of tokens at the beach entrances
  • Responsible for effective and appropriate communication to patrons
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled by lifeguard coordinator / Fire Department Command Staff.
  • Maintain a clean and safe beach environment
  • Responsible for care and maintenance of equipment and storage areas
  • Complete written reports such as accident, incident and the like on a timely basis
  • Communicate to supervisor(s) if there are problems or issues needing special attention.
  • Performs other reasonable duties as assigned by beach managers, Lifeguard Supervisors, Lifeguard Coordinators, and Fire Department Command Staff.




MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
  • Must have completed at least 1 year of high school.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain a valid lifeguard certification, from a nationally recognized institution, and must maintain it as a condition of employment.
  • Must complete all preseason training.

SUPERVISION: Under the direct supervision of the Beach Manager, Lifeguards Supervisors, Evanston Fire Department Command Staff.



PUBLIC CONTACT:
The employee has regular and frequent contact with division and department employees and other City employees as well as regular contact with community residents and representatives; and members of the public and representatives of other agencies, including elected officials.

BEACH MANAGER AND LIFEGUARD SUPERVISOR PROMOTIONAL PROCESS

  • Beach Manager and Lifeguard Supervisor positions / ranks will be determined through a promotional process and eligibility list administered by the Evanston Fire Department Command Staff in conjunction with representatives from other City of Evanston Departments.
  • Returning Lifeguards in good standing will have the opportunity to test for available Beach Manager positions for potential promotions.
  • Returning Managers in good standing will maintain rank / position and have the opportunity to test for available Lifeguard Supervisor positions for potential promotion.
  • Returning Lifeguard Supervisors in good standing will maintain rank / position from previous year.

Evanston Fire Department will hold the right to remove from rank based upon performance during the current season as well as lifeguard's returning from previous seasons based upon performance deficiencies .

Chosen candidates will be required to provide proof of licenses, certifications, and education required for this position. Candidates will also be subject to qualifying pre-employment processes, including medical examination, drug/alcohol screen, employment verification, and criminal background check.
