Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist

Medical Records

FT (40 hrs./week)

Monday - Friday

Days, 8am - 5pm

Every 4th weekend

1- 2 holidays/year

NOT a remote position

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Utilize the HIM ticketing system to process open tickets, respond to user’s requests and complete pending tickets. All incoming forms processing requests will be audited for completion and accuracy.

 

Collaborate with the Inpatient Center to collect and process paper documentation.

Prioritize admission documentation for audit and processing. Use the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to collaborate with other departments as part of this process.

 

Perform a daily ICD-10 audit to ensure proper compliance. In the event of an issue collaborate with multiple departments to rectify the issue.

 

Complete chart audits to monitor and review compliance for interdisciplinary team meetings, general inpatient stays, admissions, continuous home care, and additional audits as assigned.

 

Process provider orders, certifications, start of care orders, renewals, and addendums for signatures while collaborating with patients, family members, and other clinical staff members or providers.

 

Access third-party EHR systems as needed to process requests from staff for collection of patient records and upload of patient records.

 

Assist with the assembly of patient care admissions folders.

Complete inventory checks for HIM related supplies.

Tracks and provides follow-up on outstanding physician orders.

Monitor incoming e-fax as received to ensure they are processed timely.

Process release of information requests for both internal and external customers, to assure medical information is in compliance with confidentiality and privacy policies and state and federal regulations.

Communicate with internal and external physicians or providers involved and distributes plan of care and additional clinical information to nursing homes for identified patients.

Communicate with external providers and offices regarding notification of death.

 

Participate in the HIM orientation and training of new staff, volunteers, light duty staff, and students when needed, including cross-training with all members of the HIM department to provide backup to co-workers and volunteers responsibilities as needed. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED required.

Relevant experience in healthcare and medical terminology preferred.

Understanding the functions of a Health Information Management department is preferred.

Proficiency with Microsoft and Google Systems as well as the ability to learn or have familiarity with EHRs.

Computer experience is required, and training will be provided in organization-specific software and programs.

Ability to read, understand and extrapolate medical information from a patient’s EHR accurately and timely is required.
