About Us Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies is a joint venture between two industry leaders with a clear vision for automotive’s next chapter. From operating systems to zonal controllers to cloud and connectivity solutions, we’re addressing the challenges of electric vehicles through technology that will set the standards for software-defined vehicles around the world. The road to the future is uncharted. By combining our expertise across connectivity, AI, security and more, we’ll map a new way forward. Working together, we’ll create a future that’s more connected, more intelligent, more sustainable for everyone. Role Summary Internship Term: Rivian internships are experiences optimized for student candidates. To be eligible, you must be an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited program during the internship term with an expected graduation date between December 2025 and June 2027. If you are not pursuing a degree, please see our full time positions on our Rivian careers site. Note that if your university has specific requirements for internship programs, it is your responsibility to fulfill those requirements. Your work will enable efficient risk assessment on ECUs, sensors, and other components integral to the development of R2 and R3 vehicles through structural simulations to support mechanical design and development of low voltage electrical hardware components. Responsibilities Perform thermal management simulations on LVE electronics with a focus on enclosed electronics assemblies having both passive and active (air cooled/liquid cooled) thermal solutions. Apply know-how of heat-transfer and fluid mechanics to perform design risk assessments and provide risk mitigation solutions. Create pre/post processing scripts to increase simulation turnaround time and improve workflow efficiency. Develop thermal validation and testing plan; perform thermal validation experiments. Create simulation assessment reports and publish internal whitepapers/documentation. Qualifications Must be currently pursuing a master's or PhD degree at an accredited university. Actively pursuing a degree or one closely related in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Materials Science with a focus on thermal sciences/fluid mechanics. Relevant coursework in Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, CFD, and Numerical Methods. Familiarity with turbulent flow models. Hands-on exposure to experimental heat-transfer: thermal conductivity measurements, attaching thermocouples for model validation, working with thermal interface materials and epoxies. Research in electronics cooling preferred. Python/Matlab scripting skills.
