Position Purpose:

The Director of Sports Nutrition brings a strong understanding of sports nutrition principles with a proven ability to translate that into best-in-class support to enhance student-athlete health and performance in a high performance academic and sport environment. The role requires frequent interaction with student-athletes, sport coaches, IST staff, campus and industry colleagues, and sport administrators, and will accomplish the position purpose through education, counseling, and administration.

Dartmouth Peak Performance (DP2) is an innovative program that unites an interdisciplinary team of experts to support the holistic health, wellbeing, and development of all varsity student-athletes in their pursuit of comprehensive excellence. As an essential member of the DP2 team, this position will provide leadership in one of DP2’s eight service areas, along with sports medicine, strength and conditioning, sport science, sport and counseling psychology, leadership and mental performance, academic support, and career development. The DP2 team works collaboratively across these service areas to help student athletes maximize their potential as students, athletes, and people during their Dartmouth careers. Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:

Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition or health related field.
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • Licensed Dietitian in the state of New Hampshire within 30 days of hire.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience delivering sports nutrition services, preferability in a high performance collegiate, professional, Olympic, or tactical environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of nutritional principles as they relate to athletic performance.
  • Knowledge of clinical nutrition and best practices in care for disordered eating.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to adapt to a range of stakeholders and a diverse population.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage employees, student workers and volunteers.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively as part of a larger nutrition and integrated support team (IST).
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities at once.
  • Ability to work a non-standard work week which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of experience as a sports RD.
  • Previous experience leading or directing an NCAA nutrition program.
  • Masters degree in nutrition, exercise science or related field.
  • Board certified specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD).

Individual and Team Performance Nutrition

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for a comprehensive, practical, and evidence-based performance nutrition program.
  • Provides individual education and counseling for varsity student athletes on optimal nutrition for training, competition, travel, recovery, weight management, hydration, supplementation, and immunity, translating the latest scientific evidence into practical recommendations.
  • Develops educational materials, presentations and experiential learning opportunities for student athletes, performance staff, coaches, and teams on the above topics.
  • Works with coaches and operations personnel to identify and meet specific team nutritional needs for training and competition, such as on-site fueling options and sourcing, travel snacks, timing and sourcing of team meals, menu development.
  • Attends varsity competition and training sessions to directly support the implementation of nutrition initiatives and goals.
  • Manage and refine sports nutrition policies and procedures including but not limited to: body weight reporting, supplements, clinical care and referrals.

Dartmouth Peak Performance Integrated Support Team

  • Serves as the Sports Nutrition service area leader as part of the Dartmouth Peak Performance (DP2) interdisciplinary performance team to align efforts to support the holistic health, wellness, and development of student athletes.
  • Strategically deploy individual and team performance nutrition services in coordination with DP2 team and individual sport program needs.
  • Collaborates with primary care clinicians/counselors, sports medicine, and athletics staff on the identification and proper clinical care for nutrition issues related to medical concerns, such as disordered eating, diabetes, hypertension, lipid disorders, IBS, food allergies, and celiac disease.

Organization & Administration

  • Systematically tracks and documents nutrition programming, services, and outcomes for continuous improvement and to maximize impact on performance outcomes.
  • Supervises and mentors the DP2 Sports Dietitian and any additional nutrition staff.
  • Maximize resources allocated to the central and satellite fueling stations to meet the pre- and post-practice fueling needs.
  • Identify opportunities to connect with the mission and campus community of Dartmouth College by collaborating with Student Health Services, The Student Wellness Center, The Counseling Center, Dartmouth Dining Services, corporate sponsors, etc.
  • Demonstrate and maintain detailed knowledge on NCAA, Ivy League, Dartmouth College, and department rules and regulations.
