Description Summary:
The Director of Federal Legislative Affairs serves as the federal government liaison for Alabama A&M University (AAMU). The Director is responsible for maintaining effective relationships with and communicating University positions on pending issues to the Alabama Congressional delegation, U.S. Congress, and the Executive Branch of Federal Government. The Director of Federal Legislative Affairs also plays a major role in identifying opportunities for research funding consistent with the university's stated research objectives with federal agencies.
Examples of Duties Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitors Federal legislative and administrative developments and provides periodic reports on their impacts, as well as recommendations for positions on the same.
- Responsible for collaborating on the drafting of the Government Affairs Newsletter, legislative bulletins, and action alerts.
- Travels often to Washington, DC as required by job duties and the need for face-to-face meetings with elected leaders and agency officials.
- Regularly visits members of the Alabama Congressional Delegation in their home districts to communicate AAMU priorities and discuss AAMU's agenda.
- In cooperation with the appropriate offices, recommends and implements plans for developing effective alumni support of the institution's legislative program.
- Assists in development fundraising for the University.
- Conducts and coordinates AAMU's governmental activities and functions, in accordance with the AAMU federal legislative agenda.
- Represents the university in meetings and before public bodies, where appropriate, or arranges for its representation by university officials.
- Coordinates with other state universities on federal legislative issues and works to support efforts of the Higher Education Partnership, NAFEO, and TMCF
- Arranges for visits of Members of Congress and other federal government officials to the University and is actively involved in the planning and scheduling of special events designed to promote interaction with elected leaders at all levels and public officers.
- Performs other duties, as assigned, by the Associate Vice President of Government Affairs
Typical Qualifications Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):
- Bachelor's degree (Master's Degree/Juris Doctorate degree preferred)
- Minimum three to five years of related experience and/or training
- Strong combination of education and experience in media and communications
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of state legislative process and structure.
- Understanding of public education structure and relevant issues
- Strong writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills.
